Ellie Rayer helped England overcome their Commonwealth hoodoo as they became hockey gold medal winners for the first time at Birmingham 2022.
But had things turned out differently, Rayer could easily be representing another country in another sport.
Born in Maidenhead, Rayer, 26, was a talented track and field athlete in her youth and represented Wales as a 400m sprinter.
Hockey always held a special place in her heart and Rayer’s speed has been evident for England and Great Britain in recent years.
She was part of the Team GB side that won Olympic bronze in Tokyo, playing on with a broken nose.
