On the field of play Team England won medals in every sport and the nation excelled in athletics in particular. 

In a Games first England’s Mike McFarlane had to share his gold medal with Scottish rival Alan Wells after the British pair could not be separated in the 200m final. 

It was a dead heat in a time of 20.43.Daley Thompson retained his decathlon title with 406 points difference between him in first and Dave Steen of Canada in second. 

The scintillating Steve Cram won the 1500m title.
