Delhi 2010
Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games
A new look Team England overcame the difficulties of Delhi and finished third in the medals table thanks to gold medals from the likes of Tom Daley and Rebecca Adlington.
Team England won medals in all but one sport with 37 gold, 59 silver and 44 bronze to finish third in the medals table. It was the first time in 16 years the nation had finished outside the top two with hosts India securing second place on the final day of competition. Despite this ranking Team England won more medals than in Melbourne with 142 overall, their third highest ever medals tally at the Commonwealth Games and the biggest by an England team overseas.
There was victory in the archery and squash medals tables thanks to heroics from the likes of archer Danielle Brown, Team England’s first ever Para-sport athlete to compete in able-bodied competition, and Nick Matthew, who had been crowned world number one squash player for the first time three months earlier. Zoe Smith added her name in the record books by becoming the nation’s first female to win a medal in weightlifting.
