What a day with eight medals including one gold for Team England. Here’s your lowdown on Friday at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and what to look forward to on Saturday.
Swan wins Team England’s first medal with para powerlifting gold
Mark Swan got the ball rolling with a brilliant gold in the men’s lightweight para powerlifting, one of three medals in the discipline.
Olivia Broome followed him shortly afterwards in winning women’s lightweight bronze before Matt Harding won an emotional silver, holding a photo of his late father on the podium as he collected his medal.
In gymnastics, Team England won silver in the men's team final. Joshua Nathan, Adam Tobin, Luke Whitehouse and Alexander Yolshin-Cash produced a determined performance to secure second place after teammate Gabriel Langton suffered a scary fall on the high bar.
In swimming, Tom Dean claimed bronze in the men's 200m individual medley, Matthew Redfern won bronze in the men’s S13 100m freestyle and Team England also secured silver in both the men's and women's 4x100m freestyle relays at the Tollcross Swimming Centre.
There was a strong start to the boxing where Lauren Mackie, Ellis Trowbridge, Lucy Kings-Wheatley and Patris Mughalzai all got off to winning starts.
And Team England’s 3x3 wheelchair basketball players enjoyed a fine day as both women and men defeated Australia in group play.
Last but not least, Sian Honnor and Amy Pharaoh continued their impressive start to the bowls competition.
Medal table update
After one day of competition Team England sit fifth on the medal table with one gold, four silvers and three bronzes.
Coming up tomorrow
The action continues on Saturday with Adam Ramsay-Peaty looking to win 100m breaststroke gold 12 years after he claimed his first senior international title in the same event and the same pool.
Elsewhere, there will be medals up for grabs in the women’s team competition in the gymnastics, while England begin their netball campaign against Northern Ireland.
Competition also continues in the bowls and para bowls while England’s men and women make their 3x3 basketball entrances.
