Team England’s gymnasts paid tribute to Gabriel Langton as they clinched team silver on the opening day of competition at Glasgow 2026.

Langton, 19, suffered a bad fall on the high bar and the Birmingham gymnast tended to by medical staff before being taken to hospital.

It led to a lengthy delay in proceedings but Langton’s team-mates Luke Whitehouse, Josh Nathan, Adam Tobin, and Alex Yolshin-Cash were able to rally round and ensure Team England finished on the podium.

They finished behind Canada, who earned gold, with Australia completing the podium with bronze.

“It was really tough,” said Whitehouse. “We just had to reset, try to put it to one side mentally and focus on the job we had to do.

“I think everyone should be proud of the way we carried on after Gabe's fall.

“We all agreed we'd take another warm-up and bring our energy back into it.

“There was a delay after the first warm-up, but we regrouped. The coaches were fantastic, and the boys who had to go up on high bar were incredible.

“The togetherness of the team really showed, and I couldn't be prouder of everyone.”

Team England began well on the floor, before strong stints on the pommel horse, rings, and vault as the battle with Canada looked set to go down to the wire.

They also top-scored on the parallel bars before Langton’s fall on the high bar paused proceedings.

The team regained their composure following the delay to tend to Langton and completed the apparatus to ensure they won a medal.

“It's such a beautiful medal, and after the competition we've had today, it's something really special to take home,” said Nathan.

“I'm over the moon. It's honestly hard to put into words. Today has been such a rollercoaster.

“First and foremost, our thoughts are with Gabriel after what happened on high bar.

“The way this team came together was incredible. I couldn't be prouder of the boys.”

The team event doubled up as qualification for the individual events, with Tobin and Whitehouse both qualifying for the all-around competition.

Whitehouse was the highest scorer in the floor exercise and he will be joined in the final by Nathan, while Whitehouse will also contest the rings and vault.

Tobin will take on the pommel horse, rings, and parallel bars with the latter seeing Yolshin-Cash topping the qualifying standings.

Yolshin-Cash will also contest the high bar final.
