Lily Walker took the idea of a home Games to a new level, as she won hockey gold at the University of Birmingham where she is also a student.

Walker was one of six Birmingham alumni in the history-making England team, but the only current student as England won a first-ever Commonwealth field hockey gold.

The 20-year-old was named England Hockey Women’s Emerging Performance Player of the Year Award back in 2020, so perhaps it should not come as a surprise that Walker is gracing the international scene so soon.

But it certainly was not something Walker was expecting, as she admitted to applying for tickets for the Games only to find herself competing in them instead.
