Joe Tyers experienced the atmosphere of last year's Olympics as a sparring partner before getting a taste of the real thing in Birmingham.

The Billingham boxer sparred with fellow North East fighters Pat and Luke McCormack in Tokyo, and was spurred on by seeing Pat clinch Olympic silver.

The light welterweight reached the quarter-finals in Birmingham, losing to eventual bronze medallist Louis Richarno Colin of Mauritius.

Prior to Birmingham, Tyers already had four national titles to his name and collected even more experience at a debut Games.

Boxing
Team England brought 14 boxers to Birmingham, with the group consisting of 8 men and 6 women.
