A golden judo explosion, podium clean sweeps and a Hollywood cameo - the 1990 Auckland Commonwealth Games was a Games to remember for Team England.

A star-studded squad, packed with names such as Kriss Akabusi, Sebastian Coe, Sally Gunnell, Fatima Whitbread and Mark Foster helped England to second in the medal table in New Zealand, winning 46 golds.

The Games took place from 24 January to 3 February and made Auckland only the second city to host the Games twice after their first appearance in 1950 – 40 years before. It was also the third time that New Zealand hosted the Games after Christchurch took the responsibility in 1974.

Now, 35 years after the Opening Ceremony, we're looking back at five of Team England's top moments from Auckland 1990.

Full house in the men's 200m sprint

What's better than having one athlete on the podium? Having three.

Marcus Adam led an incredible English clean sweep in the men's 200m in Auckland.

The sprinter came home in a time of 20.10s ahead of John Regis and Ade Mafe to take the title at Mount Smart Stadium.

It was one of eight gold medals won in the athletics stadium for England that Games.

100m breaststroke clean sweep

England also saw a clean sweep in the pool in Auckland with a full podium in the men's 100m breaststroke.

Adrian Moorhouse won the only swimming gold for the team in New Zealand, touching the wall in a time of 1:01.49, almost two seconds quicker than the rest of the field.

But it was the excitement of a tantalising race between second and third place that brought the suburb of Henderson to their feet, with James Parrack beating compatriot Nick Gillingham to silver by a mere one hundredth of a second.

It meant that all three Englishmen graced the podium following a dramatic and exciting final.

Jason Statham makes his Team England debut

Before he was diving out of burning buildings and planes, action hero Jason Statham was diving off the 3m springboard for Team England.

The Hollywood star might have made his film debut in Guy Ritchie's 1998 blockbuster 'Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels' but at the 1990 Auckland Commonwealth Games, a 22-year-old Statham was performing reverse tucks into the pool.

Statham finished eighth in the 1m springboard on debut, also placing 11th in both the 3m springboard and 10m platform.

Barrage of golds on the judo mat

Team England won 14 out of 16 gold medals in judo at Auckland 1990, a feat so impressive it is worthy of it's own best moment.

Four-time world champion Karen Briggs started as she meant to go on after being elected to carry the flag at the Opening Ceremony.

Briggs went on to win lightweight gold with Diane Bell, Sharon Rendle, Sharon Mills, Jane Morris and Sharon Lee all topping the podium in their respective weight divisions.

Elvis Gordon took the men's heavyweight and open titles, as Ray Stevens, Densign White, David Southby, Roy Stone and Carl Finnery all clinching gold.

The fastest man at the Commonwealth Games

Linford Christie is still the only Englishman to have won gold medals in the 100m metres at all four major competitions open to English athletes: the Olympic Games, the World Championships, the European Championships and the Commonwealth Games.

The sprinter took his first Commonwealth title at Auckland 1990 in a time of 9.93s (wind +3.9 m/s).

He later backed up his performance with gold alongside Regis, Adam, Clarence Callender and Tony Jarrett in the men's 4x100m relay final.

Having already sealed his European title in 1986, the Commonwealth title gave him two out of the four championship crowns. He later added Olympic gold in 1992 and World Championship success in 1993.
