England’s basketball stars created Commonwealth Games history after securing a remarkable double gold in Glasgow.
Just moments after the women’s wheelchair team claimed 3x3 glory, the men’s side delivered another dramatic victory, defeating Australia 19-17 to successfully defend the title they won at Birmingham 2022.
In a tense final that never produced a clear winner, England and Australia traded blows throughout, with neither side able to build a decisive advantage. But when the pressure reached its highest point, Jamell Anderson’s team held their nerve to secure another Commonwealth crown.
As Oasis’ iconic ‘Wonderwall’ echoed around the SEC, the England players celebrated a special moment after completing a memorable night for British basketball.
“It’s incredible and I’m so proud of the team,” Anderson said after the victory.
The Nottingham star praised the unity within the squad and the belief that helped them overcome another closely fought contest.
“No matter what happens, we always stayed level and held each other accountable – that’s the most important thing for me about this team,” he added.
The triumph was made even more special for Anderson, with his three-year-old daughter Harper watching from the stands as he helped England retain their Commonwealth title.
“To win Commonwealth gold for England in front of my daughter – I’m finished. What else can I do?” he said.
Anderson hopes the moment will become a lasting memory for his daughter as he prepares to celebrate the achievement with his family and teammates.
“I hope that she remembers this day. I’m going to run and see my family now, enjoy some big sweaty hugs then have a great evening with the boys,” he added.
