Team England made it back-to-back wins at the Commonwealth Games with a 94-32 win over Tonga.

It was Team England’s highest number of goals in a Commonwealth Games match, as they sharpened up for Thursday’s crucial match with South Africa.

A fast start saw Team England score 27 goals in the first quarter and they continued to rack up the goals, scoring over 20 in three quarters.

It was Team England’s third win of the tournament and they will look to make it four against South Africa on Thursday, with a win required to reach the medal matches.

“It's so important for us to not just have a huge score and great result, but also a great performance within that and make sure that we're playing some good netball ahead of tomorrow's game,” said captain Fran Williams.

“You have to just constantly take each game as it comes, and now my head will be focussed on South Africa.”

Team England were dominant throughout the contest, with an all-court performance helping to win regular ball which was quickly converted in attack.

Goal keeper Halimat Adio and centre Amy Carter grabbed seven gains each, while Funmi Fadoju impressed at goal defence with six intercepts.



Head coach Anna Stembridge was pleased with what she saw and knows her side are relishing the pressure of facing South Africa. 

“We definitely prepared and made sure that we'd done our analysis on Tonga,” said Stembridge.

“We knew that they've really got some players that could be a real threat.

“Since one of our earlier games, we've just been really focussed on being really clinical in terms of our game possession, trying to be ruthless.

“I think that is really important as we run the changes, but also ensure that we're building confidence in different combinations.

“It’s really cliché to say that we are very much focussed on the game in front of us. I think you can sometimes get a little bit too ahead of yourself.

“It's important that we dealt with Tonga, and then we'll recover, we'll do our due diligence, and make sure that we're good to go for tomorrow.”
