Six Team England boxers secured Commonwealth Games medals with quarter-final victories on day five in Glasgow.

Lauren Mackie was first to get the job done, beating Wales’ Helen Jones by unanimous points decision in the women’s 54kg quarter-finals.

“I'm buzzing,” said the Desborough fighter, who takes on Canada’s Scarlett Savannah Delgado on Friday.

“I was the opening bout and I'm also the first bout to contend for a medal, which is great. It's great to be able to put on a good display of boxing with a great opponent in there and get the win.”

A packed evening session from an English perspective began with Lucy Kings-Wheatley defeating Sierra Leone’s Josefien Betist on a split points decision.

The 23-year-old from Birmingham, who competes in the women’s 60kg category, was relieved to progress and is targeting improvement when she takes on India’s Priya Priya in the semi-finals.

“It was on the flip of a coin so I need to be better for the next one.  It was a little bit scrappy but I’m really glad I’ve got that medal. 

“I thought I’d be able to control the scrappiness but I got a bit too lost in my own mind and started scrapping. It needs to be cleaner when we go next.”

Sacha Hickey also won by split decision, overcoming India’s Praveen Praveen 3-2 to set up a semi-final bout against Australia’s Eve Bryson.

“Ever since I stepped foot in the gym, my coach has always told me, you want to get to the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics Games,” she said.

“I’m quite a laidback character so when I walk out sometimes it feels like I’m down for a spar but tonight I definitely felt the crowd behind me. 

“Glasgow has been amazing so far and I’m just looking forward to the rest of the tournament.”

Hickey trains at the same Dagenham gym as Patris Mughalzai, who booked his own spot on the podium with a quarter-final win over Uganda’s Nuhu Batte in the men’s 65kg category.

Mary Kate Smith, 22, advanced to the last four in the women’s 75kg with a split points decision win over Patricia Mbata, of Nigeria.

“That one was very special to me,” said the Shrewsbury scrapper.

“I’ve had some close fights in the past. Patricia hits hard and I didn’t always know where they were coming from but I gritted my teeth and I wanted it more today and I got it. I’m ecstatic.”

The quarter-finals marked the end of the road for Ellis Trowbridge, however, who lost his men’s 55kg bout to Ghana’s Amadu Mohammed 4-1.

“That’s a tough one to take,” he said.

“The experience has been amazing. I've had friends and family here and I've really enjoyed myself, but I'm gutted not to be coming away with a medal.”

Isaac Okoh completed a fine day for the squad with a unanimous points decision victory over Australia's Lachlan Lawson.
