THE ROLE

Team England will create a performance focused environment within each Athletes Village and Team England venue across our wider Games delivery that allows athletes and support staff to deliver their optimal performance throughout the Games. A key factor in delivering this objective is having the right medical support team in place, who work well together to offer the high-level support required to the team.

Team Doctors are critical in the day-to-day success of Team England. Working together across the wider team, Team Doctors will play an important role in ensuring the right environment is delivered consistently for the team.

For Birmingham 2022, the Athletes Village will be split across four locations. These include Warwick University, University of Birmingham, National Exhibition Centre and Stratford, London. Team England will also have a presence at several hotels that include additional team bed spaces, performance and medical areas, meeting rooms and space for Friends and Family of athletes to visit, which will need to be supported. 

Team Doctor roles are ‘hands on’, and applicants should expect an interesting experience with varied long working hours. Team Doctor roles are voluntary.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Team Doctors will play an active role within any of the Games Time Villages and Team England Venues. Areas of responsibility include: 

  • Assisting the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) ahead of Games as required to manage all aspects of delivery needed to ensure the provision of a world-class high-performance clinic setting and medical service
  • Under the guidance of the CMO, establish an appropriate equipped medical workspace
  • Within the rules of professional confidentiality, communicate with Athletes and Support Staff as appropriate and make clear contemporaneous records of any direct or indirect interactions with athletes and support staff on the approved records system for Team England 
  • Being a Team player, ensuring a medical service that maximises the performance needs of Athletes and Support Staff
  • Having a sound understanding of the roles and responsibilities of those within the Team England medical team
  • Working closely with the Team Physiotherapy team
  • Having a sound understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the Chef de Mission, Deputy Chefs de Mission, Sport Team Leaders and other members of the administration team and the services provided
  • Undertaking all other reasonable duties as delegated by the Chef de Mission or Deputy Chefs de Mission, including administrative and organisational tasks
  • Working within the governance structure of Team England
  • Attending formal functions as the representative of the Team England delegation as requested


KEY SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Diploma or MSc in Sport and Exercise Medicine
  • Knowledge of Anti-Doping issues, and the WADA and UKAD codes and policies and evidence of up to date UKAD Advisor Certificate 
  • Level 2 adult and child safeguarding course completed within last 2 years
  • Evidence of annual appraisal, covering all aspects of professional work
  • Evidence of current medical indemnity, including cover for treating elite sports athletes
  • Current GMC registration and status
  • Current DBS Certificate 
  • Demonstrate a sound understanding of the needs of high-performance athletes and officials both prior to and during international competition.
  • A strong and clear communicator 
  • Ability to motivate others 
  • Interpret and anticipate change and respond effectively 
  • Have a strong understanding of a team ethic 
  • Ability to operate well under pressure including during normal and anti-social hours

  • Successful candidates will be informed by the end of June 2021


SUCCESSFUL APPLICANTS

The cost of travel, uniform, accommodation, meals, and associated expenses will be covered by Commonwealth Games England. Accommodation will be located at one of the Athlete Village’s or a Team Hotel, depending on the role. 

Successful applicants must commit to:

  • Attending two pre-Games Workshops (the first will likely be 2 days in Q4 of 2021 and the second likely to be 1 day in Q1 of 2022)
  • Being available for the duration of the Games Time period which falls between approximately 18 July 2022 and 10 August 2022, depending on the role, and likely based in Birmingham for the duration of this time
  • Signing the Team Members agreement, Entry & Eligibility form, and the Team Code of Conduct
  • Working within a non-smoking environment
