Zoe Newson is not new to the powerlifting scene but she did have something new watching on as she competed in Birmingham this summer: her son Duncan.

Her three-year-old son cheered her on as she won gold in the women's lightweight category to become Commonwealth champion for the first time.

Newson had Duncan, her first child in 2019, returning to the World Championships just six months later in a bid to qualify for Tokyo 2020.

With no spectators at the last Paralympics in Tokyo, Newson’s family were forced to watch from home as she came fourth in the -40kg category.

Newson has Paralympic bronze medals from 2012 and 2016, alongside bronze from the 2018 Commonwealth Games, and reasserted her credentials with World Championship silver in 2021, her first major medal after her return from pregnancy.
