Patrick Rooney seems to have timed his run of form perfectly into Birmingham 2022.

He broke into the world top 20 for the first time in May, the first Englishman to reach such heights since James Willstrop.

Rooney reached the semi-finals of the Manchester Open and the last 16 of the British Open earlier in 2022, fuelling home for a fine Commonwealth Games debut.

The north-west star is far from an overnight success - he has been playing on the World Tour since 2013. He lists improvisation, astrophysics and ‘watering bonzi trees’ among his hobbies.

The stand-out story from the glass courts at the University of Birmingham was undoubtedly that of Gina Kennedy who, on her Games debut, became the first English woman to win the Women’s Singles title.
