Inspired by watching the generation of Bradley Wiggins and Co winning Olympic medals, Matt Walls followed in their footsteps in sensational style at Tokyo 2020.
He became Britain’s first gold medallist at the Games in the four-race omnium, catapulting himself into the Olympic spotlight as he realised his childhood dream at the Izu Velodrome.
His potential was clear as early as 2016, winning gold in a team pursuit squad that included Tokyo Madison team-mate Ethan Hayter at the UEC European Junior Track Championships.
Medals at the UCI Junior Track World Championships followed before he enjoyed a breakout 2018 campaign in which he was crowned European champion in the elimination race in Glasgow.
Walls has also shown plenty of promise on the road, having signed a three-year deal with the BORA-Hansgrohe pro team, and will make his Commonwealth Games debut in Birmingham.
