Wilby is a name synonymous with recent British swimming success but butterfly star Mason is, in fact, no relation to breaststroker James.

He is the son of Martyn Wilby who coached Gemma Spofforth to a world title in 2009 and recently led Canada’s Olympic team.

Martyn’s coaching work in Florida meant that Mason grew up in the Sunshine State and went to college in USA.

Birmingham 2022 marks Wilby’s maiden senior appearance on Team England but not his first, which came at the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games where he won 200m butterfly gold.

Tom Dean aka “The SubmaDean” followed up his double Olympic triumph at Tokyo 2020 by making history in Birmingham, becoming the first Home Nations athlete to win seven medals at a single Commonwealth Games.
