Para powerlifting has helped Liam McGarry rebuild his life after he was paralysed by a spinal cord injury.
McGarry tried a number of sports as part of his recovery after being diagnosed with transverse myelitis but it was powerlifting that won his heart at the Spinal Games.
‘Big Liam’ narrowly missed out on a place at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics but earned his place as part of Team England at Birmingham 2022.
McGarry then made his Paralympic debut at Paris 2024, where he finished fifth.
The Kent native has spoken openly and candidly about his mental health struggles in the hope that it will help others and has attested to the power of the gym in aiding his own battles.
