Liam McGarry won his first para powerlifting gold as a stand-in at his first ever competition.

The 25-year-old earnt first-place and British Weightlifting attention with his 137kg lift at the 2018 Spinal Unit Games.

Within his first year in the sport, McGarry became the para-powerlifting English and British champion and secured a bronze medal in his first ever international competition in March 2020.

He credits sport as one of his keys to recovery during his time at the Salisbury Spinal Unit after suffering a T12 complete spinal cord injury, trying everything from kwik cricket, to tennis and a little bit of swimming.

But McGarry quickly fell in love with powerlifting and went on the break the British record and claim silver at the Para-Powerlifting World Cup in 2021.
