When Jodie Wilkinson turned out at a white-collar charity boxing event in 2014, she could never have imagined she would be preparing for a Commonwealth Games eight years later.

At the time, she was hoping to use the sport as a way to lose weight before resuming her fledgling career in rugby league, the sport played by her father, grandfather and brother.

Instead, the sport acted as the perfect way to channel the aggression of a player who ‘used to get sent off for starting fights’ on the rugby field and she has since gone from strength to strength.

Wilkinson began this year with bronze at the Nations Cup in Serbia and will have her sights set on another podium this summer.

At the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, Wilkinson defeated Bolanle Temitope Shogbamu of Nigeria as she reached the quarter-finals.

Team England brought 14 boxers to Birmingham, with the group consisting of 8 men and 6 women.
