Home Games come around once in a generation for athletes, if at all, but few can claim to have the Games in their own backyard.

Weightlifter Jaswant Shergill is one of those after being brought up in Birmingham, he then attended university just down the road in Coventry before returning to the Second City.

Shergill has had to wait patiently to make his second Commonwealth Games appearance. He was still studying when he made his debut in 2014, finishing 11th, but the teacher had to sit out the 2018 Games with an injury.

Shergill bounced back to win the –67kg category at the British Championships in 2019 before finishing fourth at the same event earlier this year.

The 29-year-old regularly takes his medals back into school for a shiny edition of Show and Tell, but this summer his pupils may get to cheer him on in person.
