Jamal Petrgrave chose the perfect time to medal at a first major championships, taking home gold at Birmingham 2022.

The middleweight claimed men's -90kg gold thanks to a 'Golden Score' victory over Remi Feuillet of Mauritius.

He is also a three-time British champion having claimed the national crown in  2017, 2019 and 2021.

The 25-year-old had a promising youth career as he grabbed silver at the U23 Europeans in 2018 and a bronze at the junior competition the year before.

In April of last year, the Arsenal fan had to withdraw from the European Championships in Sofia due to injury but a first European Cup gold in Dubrovnik in October 2021 was a sign of what was possible when he got to Birmingham.

Judo
The three-day Judo bonanza kicked off with Team England success in the form of a gold medal for Ashley McKenzie who came out on top in an all-English final against Sam Hall in the 60kg competition.
