As an eight-year-old, Freya Colbert attended the British Swimming Olympic Trials as a spectator as competitors looked to seal their spot at London 2012.

Now, after a successful British Championships, Colbert will make her senior bow at the World Swimming Championships before donning a Team England swimsuit for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Such progress would be remarkable for anyone but it is particularly so for the 18-year-old, who has had to balance training and both GCSEs and A-Levels amid the pandemic.

Last year Colbert was back at her desk at Kesteven & Grantham Girls School only a matter of days after competing at the British Swimming Trials, where she had reached three finals.

A year ago she represented Great Britain at junior level, and now has two of the biggest events in swimming to contend with in what could be a breakthrough summer.

Tom Dean aka “The SubmaDean” followed up his double Olympic triumph at Tokyo 2020 by making history in Birmingham, becoming the first Home Nations athlete to win seven medals at a single Commonwealth Games.
