Emma Reid beat her idol Natalie Powell to take gold in the women's -78kg at Birmingham 2022 to cap an exceptional return from injury.

The 28-year-old had shoulder surgery in 2019 and had to overcome doubts about ever making it to a major Games.

She headed to Birmingham in imperious form, winning the first 10 of the 16 competitions she appeared in on her return from surgery.

Coming up against the judoka she had admired most as she made her way into the sport, Reid did not falter edging the contest by a singular waza-ari.

The Royston native claimed gold at the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam to send her soaring up the world rankings list after she had already won bronze at the Zagreb Grand Prix.

It was a sign of things to come as she topped the podium in Birmingham.

Judo
The three-day Judo bonanza kicked off with Team England success in the form of a gold medal for Ashley McKenzie who came out on top in an all-English final against Sam Hall in the 60kg competition.
