Declan James danced to Commonwealth Games glory for the first time in 2022, capping a glorious year of doubles squash.

James and playing partner James Willstrop claimed gold at the World Squash Championships in April and followed that up with some brilliance at Birmingham in the summer.

James, nicknamed ‘The Dark Knight’, is a proven performer at squash’s highest level.

The Nottingham native gets his nickname from the DC series’ multiple links to the region; including the East Midlands town of Gotham and filming locations in the area.

He wears a Batman-style logo on much of his training wear.

James won doubles bronze alongside James Willstrop on the Gold Coast, beaten by team-mates Daryl Selby and Adrian Waller in the semi-finals.

Some of the best moments of James’ career so far have come on home soil, including his first two World Tour titles that were won in his home city.

The stand-out story from the glass courts at the University of Birmingham was undoubtedly that of Gina Kennedy who, on her Games debut, became the first English woman to win the Women’s Singles title.
