Charlotte Payne has had to overcome more than most on her journey to the very top of women’s hammer throw.
The Berkshire native is deaf in both ears and wears a cochlear implant, but stormed her way to two national titles in 2022 and 2023. Her 70.59m winning throw in 2022 decimated the previous world record for deaf athletes, as well as making Payne the youngest British woman to pass the 70m mark.
Since then, she has endured a string of injuries and grieved the passing of coach and British field athletics legend Paul Dickenson, who had been instrumental in her development and had catered to her unique training needs.
But after an enormous throw over 70m at the 2026 UK Athletics Championships earned her a silver medal, Payne looks in formidable form ahead of Glasgow 2026.
