Versatile swim star Brodie Williams has made a smooth transition from prodigious junior to solid senior, striking double gold on his Team England debut at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Williams claimed 200m backstroke gold in front of his home crowd in Birmingham, as well 4x100m medley gold and 100m backstroke silver.

Williams’ status in the senior ranks was cemented by gold at the 2018 European Championships in Glasgow in the 4x100m medley relay, his first senior medal.

The Somerset native’s start in the sport was far from smooth, however. He was a nervous swimmer initially and swam for months with deflated armbands to build confidence.

Tom Dean aka “The SubmaDean” followed up his double Olympic triumph at Tokyo 2020 by making history in Birmingham, becoming the first Home Nations athlete to win seven medals at a single Commonwealth Games.
