Versatile swim star Brodie Williams has made a smooth transition from prodigious junior to solid senior, marked out again by a Team England debut in Birmingham.

The Somerset native’s start in the sport was far from smooth, however. He was a nervous swimmer initially and swam for months with deflated armbands to build confidence.

Fast forward nearly two decades and Williams’ status in the senior ranks was cemented by gold at the 2018 European Championships in Glasgow in the 4x100m medley relay.

Williams, who lists his best stroke as backstroke and favourite as freestyle, should make an impression across disciplines at the Commonwealth Games.

Tom Dean aka “The SubmaDean” followed up his double Olympic triumph at Tokyo 2020 by making history in Birmingham, becoming the first Home Nations athlete to win seven medals at a single Commonwealth Games.
