Alison Waters has emerged from retirement for a Commonwealth Games swansong.

More than 20 years since she made her professional debut, the former world No.3 announced her retirement from the sport in December 2021.

But the pull of Birmingham was too strong and she is back for a fifth and final Games.

Waters’ mother, a Level 2 coach, noticed her natural flair and she first played competitive aged six, winning the British under-12 title aged nine.

She found her best form at the 2014 Commonwealth Games as she won mixed doubles silver with Peter Barker and doubles bronze alongside Emma Beddoes.

The stand-out story from the glass courts at the University of Birmingham was undoubtedly that of Gina Kennedy who, on her Games debut, became the first English woman to win the Women’s Singles title.
