England wrestlers Jo and Sasha Madyarchyk both have their sights set firmly on a podium finish in Delhi.
The couple, who have been married three-and-a-half years, said today they want to bring medals home to England.
This is the first time women’s wrestling has featured at the Commonwealth Games and 25-year-old Jo said that “a good draw and making weight easily” could make all the difference to her medal prospects.
Both Jo and Sasha are freestyle wrestlers – Jo will compete in the women’s 51kg category and Sasha in the men’s 60kg.
Sasha, 26, said: “If everything comes right, I think we’ll get a medal. I have to drop six kilos, so have to diet and train twice as hard as usual.”
Jo added that the food in the Athletes’ Village was a temptation but they would wait until after they compete next week to take full advantage of it.
The pair hope to leave Delhi having upset the traditional wrestling order.
Jo said: “The Canadians and the Indians are the powerhouses in the Commonwealths and we are here to change that.”
