England’s Joe Muskett did not have quite enough in his arsenal to make the weightlifting podium this evening.
Muskett, who lifts in the 105kg+ category, took a number of positives from his fifth place this evening in his Commonwealth Games debut.
“I had two goals coming into the Games: making a total and a top five finish. Although the total was not what I wanted I’m very pleased with the overall result and I now have a Commonwealth ranking,” he said.
The 25-year-old Londoner lifted 142kg in the snatch and 172kg in the clean and jerk for a combined total of 314kg. Winner Australian Damon Kelly set a Games record 221kg in the clean and jerk on his way to a total lift of 397kg.
Muskett said he had learned from his appearance in Delhi and would apply his acquired knowledge in future competitions and was already looking to Glasgow in 2014.
He said: “I’ll take this experience away and hopefully in 2014 I’ll be less nervous and able to bring home a medal.”
