Gurbinder Cheema’s hopes of a second Commonwealth Games medal ended this evening when he finished fifth in the men’s 105kg weightlifting category in Delhi.
The Manchester bronze medallist finished fourth in Melbourne in 2006 but his lift of 328kg at the Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Complex left him out of the medals this time around.
British Champion Cheema, from the West Midlands, was the joint leader after the snatch having lifted 150kg. The clean and jerk saw him successfully lift 175kg and 178kg with his first two attempts but he failed at 181kg leaving him 4kg off the bronze medal position.
Monday sees the last of England’s weightlifters, Joe Muskett, competing in the 105+kg category.
