Londoner Jo Calvino set a British clean and jerk record in the women’s 53kg category as she lifted 93kg, beating her own record by 1kg on her way to a fifth place finish.
In the snatch, Calvino, who finished fourth in the 48kg category in Melbourne four years ago, succeeded at 66kg but made two failed attempts at 69kg.
“I’m very disappointed with the snatch,” she said afterwards. “It has been going well in training but it just didn’t come together today. I pulled it back in the clean and jerk and I can’t complain about setting a new British record and a PB.”
With her personal best, Calvino’s combined weight was 159kg.
Marilou Dozois Prevost of Canada took the gold.
Earlier in the day, Christopher Freebury competed in the men’s 62kg category. His snatch of 110kg and clean and jerk of 125kg gave him a total lift of 235kg, resulting in a 15th place finish on his Commonwealth Games debut.
