Commonwealth Games England has launched a new sustainability initiative in partnership with charity StreetGames that will see kit used by athletes, staff, and volunteers put back in action on courts and pitches across the country.

The initiative will allow kit made for Glasgow 2026 to be sold and redistributed, with a percentage of the proceeds donated to StreetGames. 

StreetGames opens access to sport and physical activity for children from underprivileged backgrounds, with money from the kit scheme designed to help the charity create more opportunities. The charity works with over 1,600 community partners to deliver sport across the UK and helps over 400,000 children and young people each year. 

Mark Lawrie OBE, CEO of StreetGames, said: “We are thrilled that Team England have chosen StreetGames to benefit from their kit distribution programme, with the partnership showcasing the powerful role sport can play in tackling some of society's biggest challenges.

"The forward-thinking initiative will not only promote sustainability and drive positive environmental change, but with every pound raised will also help to transform the lives of young people living in low-income, under-served communities through sport and physical activity.” 

The new initiative is part of a wider effort from Commonwealth Games England to improve its sustainability heading into the next Commonwealth Games cycle, with a particular focus on kit management. 

Its 2030 Sustainability Strategy prioritises environmentally considerate practices, reducing environmental impact and using the power of sport to create positive change on and off the field of play. 

Mark Osikoya, CEO of Commonwealth Games England, said: “The production of sportswear has a significant environmental footprint, so it’s important that we look at ways we can do things differently. This initiative is part of Team England’s wider commitment to sustainability and gives our Glasgow 2026 kit the chance to have a life beyond the Games, while also creating a positive social impact through the funds raised for StreetGames.” 

He added, “As a first step, we hope this initiative shows how major sporting events can take practical steps to reduce their environmental impact, while using the power of sport to create positive change both on and off the field of play.”
