Rebecca Adlington won England’s first medal at the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games coming from behind to snatch a bronze in the women’s 200m freestyle.

The double Olympic champion clocked 1.58.47, with her compatriot Jo Jackson coming in fifth at 1.58.66.

The 21-year-old from Mansfield, who has her two Olympic title events to come, said: “I was happy to be in the first final at my first ever Commonwealth Games but to get a medal is unbelievable.

"I don't really have the speed of the other girls as I'm more of a distance freestyler but I came back well and it looks good for the rest of my programme with the 400m and 800m still to come.

"I couldn't see what was going on, in the race. I was in a far lane and it was difficult to see so I just decided to swim my own race and see where it got me.

"I was ranked fifth coming into the event so I didn't think a medal was likely but it was a strong swim and I'm delighted with bronze."

"It's just a bonus event for me. It’s nice to get in and get involved.”

Australian Kylie Palmer won gold as Jazz Carlin took silver, the first women’s swimming medal for Wales for 36 years.
