On the passing of Sir Roger Bannister Chairman of Commonwealth Games England Ian Metcalfe said
“Sir Roger Bannister was a giant of English sport, one of the first household names from the athletics track. The thoughts of everyone at Commonwealth Games England are with his friends and family at this sad time.
“As athletics fans we have been left with so many unforgettable moments. The Miracle Mile in 1954 is without doubt one of the greatest moments in Commonwealth Games history and one of the greatest athletics races of all time.
“Sir Roger’s achievement captivated millions and I know that the Team England athletes who will follow in his footsteps at the Opening Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games, one month from today, will do their very best to build on his inspiring legacy.”
