Team England have continued to build momentum ahead of the Commonwealth Games with the announcement of a 15-strong weightlifting squad.

Reigning Commonwealth champions Emily Campbell, Chris Murray and Sarah Davies Smale are among those selected for Glasgow, with nine athletes set to make their Commonwealth Games debuts. Leading the team is double Olympic medallist Campbell, who returns for her third Commonwealth Games aiming to defend her +87kg title.

Campbell delivered a dominant performance at Birmingham 2022, winning gold with a Commonwealth record, and arrives in Glasgow as one of Team England’s most decorated athletes.

Chris Murray also returns as defending champion after claiming 81kg gold in Birmingham with a Commonwealth record.

Murray will be targeting more success in Glasgow, adding to a medal collection that already includes bronze from the 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games.

Sarah Davies Smale will make her fourth Commonwealth Games appearance after returning to the top of the sport in impressive fashion.

Davies Smale upgraded her Gold Coast 2018 silver to 71kg gold at Birmingham 2022 with a Games record and heads to Glasgow as a back-to-back European champion. She also boasts world silver from 2021.

Andrew Griffiths and Noorin Gulam both return to Team England after making their Commonwealth Games debuts in Birmingham.

Griffiths’ journey into elite weightlifting began in basketball before earning Team England selection just six years later, while Gulam impressed in Birmingham by setting a British record in the 73kg snatch.

There is also a return for Cyrille Tchatchet II, who will represent Team England for the second time at his third Commonwealth Games.

Tchatchet competed for Cameroon at Glasgow 2014 before being granted refugee status in the UK in 2016. He later represented the Refugee Olympic Team at Tokyo 2020 before making his Team England debut at Birmingham 2022.

Olympic and European bronze medallist Madias Ngake earns her Team England debut after switching allegiance from Cameroon in 2024.

Ngake won Olympic bronze at London 2012 and arrives in Glasgow with major international form after winning World Championship silver in 2024 and European bronze this year for Great Britain.

The women’s squad also includes Erin Barton, whose journey into weightlifting began at the age of 30 and now sees her selected for her first Commonwealth Games.

She is joined by European bronze medallist Isabella Brown, who also prepares for her first multi-sport Games.

Brown has already built an impressive international CV as a junior European and world medallist, and added senior European snatch bronze to her collection last year. She was also named on the prestigious SportsAid One-to-Watch shortlist in 2023.

Fellow youngster Eliza Pratt earns her maiden Team England selection after competing at senior European and World Championships over the past year.

Tammy Wong completes the women’s squad, bringing with her extensive international experience representing Great Britain.

On the men’s side, qualified doctor Jonathan Chin heads to his first Commonwealth Games alongside fellow debutants Christopher Russ and Kieran Stiles.

Josh Hutton will also represent Team England for the first time after making the transition into weightlifting from ice hockey.

Team England Chef de Mission Jonathon Riall said: “It is brilliant to be able to announce our weightlifters for Glasgow 2026, who are ready to light up the stage."

"Our squad has a strong mix of previous Commonwealth champions and those set to shine for Team England for the first time, and I can't wait to watch what is always a brilliant spectacle."
