After missing out on participating in the recent Hockey World Cup due to injury, hockey star Simon Mantell is determined to be selected for the Commonwealth Games in Delhi when he recovers from his recent surgery.
In an interview with the Daily Telegraph Simon tells of his aspirations to make it to the Commonwealths and come home with a medal.
“There’s always competition for places which is good for the squad but I am gradually getting off crutches and I’m aiming to be fit to get into the team.”
"For me the important thing is to get back for the Games."
Mantell missed selection having been injured just before the World Cup began. After an impressive start to the competition his teammates were disappointed not to get a medal when they lost out in the bronze playoffs to the Netherlands.
“I’ve spoken to the guys and they are disappointed but we’ve got to learn from the World Cup and use the experience to improve for the Commonwealths.
“There is always room to improve; although we won the Euros last summer we always know there is progress to be made. You can’t stand still.”
