Isobel Pooley might have sealed a domestic title and equaled the national high jump record at the British Championships but she took a matter of moments to turn her attention to greater heights.
The 22-year-old Commonwealth Games silver medallist didn't have the best of times during the indoor campaign and saw her national record fall to Katarina Johnson-Thompson who soared to 1.97m in Sheffield earlier this year.
But at Birmingham's Alexander Stadium Pooley finally produced the performance that has been eluding her as she became the first British woman to jump 1.97m outdoors.
That leap earned her a cheque for £5000 and helped her retain the title she claimed for the first time 12 months ago.
But there was no indication that Pooley, who has now secured her place on the team for the World Championships in Beijing, was going to rest on her laurels as she targets the ever-illusive 2.00m mark.
“Clearing 1.97 put me in complete shock,” said Pooley.
“But it's been such a psychological process to the point where I believe I can clear 1.97 and 2.00m but 1.97 is only half of the deal.
“I have another goal right now and there is no reason why I shouldn't look to 2.00m. I'm overjoyed with the gold medal and to go to Beijing but I want that 2.00m and there's no reason why I can't do it.
“I'll just keep going and enjoying what I do because I enjoyed it out there and the atmosphere was so lovely.
“All of that combined to produce that performance and if I lose sight of that then I will put too much pressure on myself – if something is good why change it.
“There was pride as well because I was defending champion and I only won for the first time last year but that wasn't a healthy thing to focus on.
“I just wanted to go out and enjoy it and give Birmingham a good time.”
