Emily Godley has clinched gold with a stunning performance win the women’s 75kg weightlifting, beating Games record-holder and reigning champion Marie-Eve Beauchemin-Nadeau of Canada.

With Godley’s huge victory, she claims Team England’s first gold medal in weightlifting at the Gold Coast, following on from Sarah Davies silver medal-winning lift earlier in the day in the women’s 69kg.

Posting an enormous 96kg in the snatch, the highest in the final, she needed to lift 126kg in the Clean & Jerk to beat the Canadian who emerged as the only threat, and she did. And not only this, she was the only competitor to complete a lift on every single attempt, steadily improving on each time, bursting away from the pack. She set a total score of 222kg, one more than Beauchemin-Nadeau who had cut the deficit in the Clean & Jerk.

Godley’s triumph sees her improve drastically to her 5thplace finish in Glasgow in 2014, and brings up Team England’s medal tally to 11 for Day 4, including four golds.
