Running every four years, the Commonwealth Games last graced Scotland's most populous city a decade ago in what was a sporting showcase to remember.

Back in 2014, swimming sensation Adam Peaty won his first major medal, Greg Rutherford added to his long jumping legend, Nicola Adams became the first female boxer to win a Commonwealth crown and Claudia Fragapane's four gymnastics golds made her Team England's most successful female athlete at a single Games in over 80 years.

What are the Commonwealth Games?

The Commonwealth Games are a multi-sport competition running every four years comprising of athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations.

The Games were first held in 1930 in Hamilton, known then as the British Empire Games, and have been held every four years since, excluding a break during World War Two.

Known as the Commonwealth Games since 1978, the event has been hosted across the globe with New Dehli, Kuala Lumpur, Manchester, and Auckland all playing host over the past century.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games will take place from 23 July to 2 August 2026.

What venues are hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games?

Four main venues within an eight-mile corridor are set to host the Games.

Scotstoun Stadium will host the athletics programme, while the Tollcross International Swimming Centre will be the home of swimming.

The Emirates Arena - including the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome - and the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) will host the other eight sports.

Athletes and support staff will be housed in hotel accommodation.

What sports are part of the 2026 Commonwealth Games?

The 2026 Commonwealth Games will be comprised of 10 different sports.

Glasgow will play host to athletics, swimming, track cycling, weightlifting, lawn bowls, judo, 3x3 basketball, gymnastics, netball, and boxing.

Six of those sports - athletics, swimming, track cycling, weightlifting, lawn bowls and 3x3 basketball - will also feature para events.

3x3 wheelchair basketball made its debut at the Birmingham 2022 Games proving an instant hit with fans and the sport will return for a second Commonwealth Games appearance in two years' time.
