With less than a year to go until Glasgow 2026, fans now have even more Commonwealth sport to look forward to after the announcement of Amdavad as the host of the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

It will be the second time the Friendly Games has been to India, following on from Delhi 2010, and will also see the Games mark its centenary.

Here's everything you need to know about the announcement.

Where is Amdavad?

Amdavad, more commonly known in English as Ahmedabad, is the fifth-largest city in India by population and the largest city in the state of Gujarat.

It sits in the west of India on the banks of the Sabarmati River, just south of the Tropic of Cancer and about 440km north of Mumbai.

Why is Amdavad also known as Ahmedabad?

Ahmedabad is the English name for the city, while Amdavad is the Gujurati name.

People from the city are commonly known as Amdavadis and the 2030 Games will use the Gujurati name.

What is Amdavad known for?

Amdavad is well-known for its textile industry, particularly its cotton trade, which has led to it being known as the ‘Manchester of India’.

Amdavad’s historic walled city was also named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017.

The walled city was founded in 1411 CE and much of the architecture exists to this day.

The city also has a rich sporting history, having hosted a number of Cricket World Cup matches.

These include the 2023 Men’s Cricket World Cup final at the Narendra Modi Stadium – the largest stadium in the world by capacity.

The Commonwealth Games will build on this sporting heritage, as Amdavad aims to become the sports capital of India.

What is Amdavad 2030?

The Amdavad 2030 Commonwealth Games will mark the centenary of the Commonwealth Games.

The Games were first held in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada where a 92-strong English team travelled across the world, topping the medal table with a total of 61 medals.

The decision was formally ratified by delegates of the 74 Commonwealth member nations and territories in Glasgow at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly.

What sports will be included at Amdavad 2030?

Commonwealth Sport confirmed that between 15 and 17 sports will be included at Amdavad 2030.

This is an increase from the reduced 10-sport schedule of Glasgow 2026 but the full slate of sports have not been confirmed.

Athletics and para athletics, swimming and para swimming, table tennis and para table tennis, bowls and para bowls, weightlifting and para powerlifting, artistic gymnastics, netball, and boxing are the only sports to have been definitively included.

The venues have not been confirmed but organisers revealed that two new major venues are set to be constructed.

The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave will host an arena, aquatics facility and tennis courts while the Gujarat Police Academy Sports Hub, which will have an athletics stadium and shooting centre.

Both are set to be completed by 2029.
